IM-finansierad skola i Spitidalen firar 15 år

I have just returned from a ten day visit to Spiti Valley, India, where a IM sponsored local school celebrated it´s 15th anniversary.

Spiti, which is ethnically and culturally Tibetan but now a part of India, was a restricted and closed area for a long time, but opened some twenty years ago. With rapid changes, it was noted that “new changes” was coming too fast. So IM was approached in 1993 to build a school to preserve the valley’s religion and culture. So a primary school was constructed and inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in September 1996. The school was named Munsel-Ling, which means “Place for lightning the darkness”.

Today Munsel-Ling has become a high school with nearly 500 students. The school is the main cultural centre of the valley and more than 25 percent of the valley’s children attend this school.
It was a 3 day celebration. The first 2 days were competition in sport etc. The third and final day was attended by parents and guest. Several hundred people, from Lahore, Kenore and Spiti Valleys came.

Greetings from Rajpur,

Wangchuk Gyalpo, IM´s regional director for Asia - India, Nepal and Tibet
